The Society proudly brings internationally acclaimed Australian playwright, Suzie Miller, home to St Kilda for an evening of fabulous recollections and insights.

In conversation with local journalist and filmmaker, Marianne Latham, Suzie will talk about her glittering career and the joys and challenges of growing up in St Kilda. Her mother, Elaine Miller, famously became the first woman mayor on St Kilda Council in 1982.

Her award winning play, Prima Facie - a searing portrayal of a young female barrister brilliant at defending men accused of sexual assault until she becomes the victim - sealed her international writing reputation. The play is returning to Australia after a successful season in London’s West End.

Last year Prima Facie was published as a novel by Pan Macmillan Australia and is also being developed as a film starring Oscar-nominated actor, Cynthia Erivo

Suzie’s latest play RGB: Of Many, One, about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to be appointed to the US Supreme Court and passionate advocate for gender equality, has also been a smash hit. It has just completed a sellout season in Melbourne and is now on the way to the US.

Suzie has fond memories of growing up with her extended family in Westbury Grove in East St Kilda and vivid recollection of the uneasy pathway for women in local politics in the former City of St Kilda in the 1970s, when her mother became a Councillor, and then Mayor.

Before moving to London with her family in 2010 to pursue a theatre writing career full-time, she was a criminal defence lawyer in the human rights sector. Her work with sexual assault survivors inspired her writing.

Suzie’s personal tales, like her plays, offer compelling listening. It’s bound to be an entertaining and memorable evening.

There will be opportunities for the audience to ask questions and to purchase copies of her recently released book, Prima Facie.

Tickets are $20 + $3.40 booking fee.
