National Theatre
Corner Barkly and Carlisle Streets
St Kilda

The National Theatre was built in 1921 in the Beaux Arts style as a 3,000-seat cinema – Victory Theatre.

Since 1974 it has been the home of the National Ballet School and the National Drama School, when the original cinema stalls area was converted to studio and rehearsal rooms and the dress circle into a 783-seat live venue with the addition of a stage.

The National Theatre has offered Society members a guided tour of the building. The tour will take 30-40 minutes and includes the foyer areas, auditorium, backstage and rehearsal and training rooms.

*Please note that as the theatre’s stair climber is out of action, the tour is not suitable for anyone who is unable to navigate 20 stairs. This is a free member event.  As numbers are limited, booking is essential.

While the tour is free of charge, The National would appreciate a donation towards the ongoing restoration of the theatre. Donations may be made at: https://nationaltheatre.org.au/support-us/
