St Kilda Foreshore and Fitzroy Street, St Kilda
Members joined Society Committee member David Brand for an afternoon walk exploring the architectural and cultural history of Fitzroy Street, beginning at the St Kilda foreshore.
Through the area's streetscapes and architecture, participants traced St Kilda's social roller-coaster ride through history, from its heyday as an exclusive seaside resort, through periods of decline when it became Melbourne's place of last resort, and on to the diverse and evolving suburb it is today.
Drawing on his extensive knowledge of local history, architecture and planning, David shared insights into the buildings, public spaces and historical events that have shaped Fitzroy Street and the broader St Kilda precinct. The walk prompted discussion about the area's changing identity and the challenges and opportunities involved in balancing heritage conservation with urban change.

David Brand has lived on the St Kilda foreshore for more than 40 years, practising as an architect and teaching architectural history and design at various universities. He is a well-known local heritage and planning activist, has served two terms as a City of Port Phillip councillor, and was elected to the Society's Committee of Management in 2025.
Drawing on decades of professional and community involvement in St Kilda, David provided members with a unique perspective on the suburb's architectural heritage, changing urban landscape and enduring cultural significance.
