  • Description:

A very large house with much elaboration on three sides. Designed in broadly Italianate form with Queen Anne detailing, it featured a turret on the corner of Dickens and Tennyson, a wrap around two level cast-iron verandah, and a tower facing east. The effect was further elaborated by the use of brick with light coloured render highlights, the difference lost when it was all painted white.

  • History:
The managers of the Berley private hotel were William Bertram and Marjorie Bentley. In 1934 in Who's Who of the world of Women, Marjorie said:

'It was very grand with a mahogany staircase, large stainglass windows, a veranda, tennis courts, circular driveway and formal dining room with waiters in Black Tie.'

Her father Howard Bertram Bentley was a garage proprietor then a builder-estate agent. She says he built all the blocks of flats (except one) in Garden Court, just off Dickens St. She also says they owned a flat at Aston Court 43 Acland St, Spanish style flats. Throughout the 1940s her parents lived at 3 Church Square. They owned-leased the Village Belle Market and also the Camberwell Junction market.

Leo Rosner was a postwar Polish migrant, surviving the war thanks to his talent as a piano accordionist, and the intervention of Oscar Schindler. Arriving here in 1949, he played with various orchestras, often in St Kilda. In 1954 turned the huge manion Pladda into the Moulin Rouge nightclub, known for its good food, dance music, and exotic floorshows.

Ken Norling, long-term St Kilda resident, recalled in 2026 that , it was demolished c1977, following a fire.

It was replaced by two houses, the corner one itself replaced by flats c2010.
