It is a two-storey rendered brick Classical style mansion dominated by a central columned portico with cast-iron verandahs either side, flanked by wing walls. The house is well set back behind a gravel drive and carpark. The gate posts and cast iron gates appear to be original, though the fence is not. Real estate images show the interior features a wide tiled hall, with elaborate doorcases to the main rooms, and to the rear there is what was likely a billiards room, with a tall timber-lined skylight.
Andrew Sutherland lived in a brick house here from 1857, described as an 'elegant two storey mansion'. In 1874 he replaced it with the present house, probably called Stafford House. (The Port Phillip Heritage Review states it was Alexander Sutherland, but the Melbourne Mansions Database notes he lived in Toorak, and confirms it was Andrew Sutherland who lived in St Kilda.)
It seems that he also built a matching house on a the lot to the north, called Cleveden.
He died in 1880, and in 1890 it was sold to Mr Duncan Grant, who renamed it Stanthorpe.
Cleveden and a third property to the noth called Lyndhurst were also sold. The MMBW plan of 1896 shows that the third house was demolished and the land added to Cleveden. That lot was sold in 1938 and a set of four flats built.
The Port Phillip Heritage Review states that between 1886-89 Stanthorpe was occupied by long serving Jewish politician Jonas F. Levien.
In 1919 the house was pruchased for £3500 by the adjacent Presbyterian Church. In 1956 it was put to use as the manse and church officer’s flat, previously at 102 Hotham Street. The house later known as Yamba on the Upper Elplanade was built in 1870 as the first Manse, though let out by the mid 1870s.
After infrequent use by the church, it was sold to a developer in 1999, renovated with Victorian decor inside, and used as commercial offices.
Sold again in 2019, after which it appears the Victorian decor was removed, and remained in commercial use.
