Rearing up in the middle of the otherwise low scale suburban Robe Street St Kilda is this idiosyncratic pile.
It was created in c1920 by rebuilding the Star & Garter Hotel, which was delicensed in 1919; the conversion was designed by A.V. Gillespie.
The hotel was originally a three storey 5 bay structure, built in 1854 as Pitt’s, which was added to in the form of a three storey terrace to the right in 1885 (probably).
The verandahs were replaced with Arts & Crafts style porches, and the interiors greatly altered, but the late Victorian door to the terrace is largely intact, and the arched entry to the pub is too, while the top floor flat has windows with very fine glazing bars typical of the 1850s.
A ground floor flat in the terrace has arched openings and a c1920 fireplace.
