St Kilda

The St Kilda area is part of the traditional lands of the Yalukit willam clan. As part of the Kulin nation, the Yalukit willam were connected to clans as far away as the Murray River. Dr Gary Presland will detail the nature of these connections and elaborate on how the Yalukit willam made a living, at the same time honouring and caring for their country.

Gary has been researching, writing and talking about the Indigenous history and natural history of the Melbourne area for more than 40 years. He is the author of eight books on these topics. His study of Melbourne’s pre-European landscapes, titled The place for a village, won the 2009 Community History Awards for Best Publication.

Gary is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and an Honorary Associate of Museum Victoria. He is also president of his local historical society, in Box Hill. This is a free public event. Bookings required.
