Melbourne after World War I faced a housing shortage and flats were seen as a solution to the problem. By the mid-1930s almost as many flats as houses were being built across the city and many of these were in St Kilda. By 1947 St Kilda contained 5,500 flats, a quarter of all flats in Melbourne.

Our journey with historian Isaac Hermann will take us down the 'Slaughterhouse Road' between the 'Abattoirs', over the bridge by the 'Dung Heap', dodge the bullets by the 'Riffle Butt', pass the 'Coal Mine', go onto the 'Quarantine Ground' through the Tea-Tree and up to the 'Glen Huntley Graves' at Little Red Bluff…

The St Kilda area is part of the traditional lands of the Yalukit willam clan. As part of the Kulin nation, the Yalukit willam were connected to clans as far away as the Murray River. Dr Gary Presland will detail the nature of these connections and elaborate on how the Yalukit willam made a living, at the same time honouring and caring for their country.
