Monday 4 May 2026
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Heroes Lounge (upstairs, lift access)
St Kilda Army and Navy Club
88 Acland Street, St Kilda
Join historian, biographer and publisher Dr Judith Buckrich as she reflects on how fundamental St Kilda has been to the formation of her life.
In this intimate talk, Judith will share her personal experience of how St Kilda has been her spiritual and cultural base since she arrived in Australia with her parents in 1958. For her, St Kilda is a place made special by the continual creativity of the people who live here; a place that takes you outside yourself.
“Many of the most significant events of my life have occurred in St Kilda. It’s a magical place full of the ghosts of the long and not so long dead as well as people I don’t know any more. I will be talking about this very personal experience.”
And many in the audience will, no doubt, have their own memories and experiences to add. It promises to be an engaging and lively evening contemplating St Kilda’s history and its ever-changing culture by the sea.
Judith Buckrich is best known for her histories of Melbourne people, places, and institutions, including Acland Street: the Grand Lady of St Kilda (ATOM 2017), which won the 2018 Fellowship of Australian Writers (Victoria) Award for Non-Fiction.
Judith was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1950 and emigrated to Melbourne with her parents in 1958, settling in St Kilda.
“In those days," she writes, “St Kilda was full of newly or ‘newishly’ arrived European migrants and we felt right at home in Acland Street and the South Pacific Baths.”
