Members attended the St Kilda Historical Society's 2026 Annual General Meeting, followed by a presentation by guest speaker Mick Slocum OAM. After the formal AGM proceedings, members and guests heard from Mick as he explored the history, significance and restoration of Victoria's iconic pillar post boxes, drawing on years of hands-on conservation work and historical research.

Speaker

Mick Slocum OAM is an artist, heritage conservationist and public speaker whose career has spanned more than five decades across folk music, theatre, broadcasting and cultural heritage. Many people may know Mick as a member of The Bushwackers Band in the 1970s and subsequently The Sundowners. St Kilda locals with long memories may remember him from his days as a pharmacist at Solly Lew Pharmacy on Fitzroy Street.

In recent years, Mick has also been widely recognised for his work in restoring Melbourne’s rare Victorian pillar post boxes. His presentation will combine historical research on design and construction, practical conservation techniques and personal stories gathered during years of restoration work across Victoria.
