Alexandra Street is within the bailiwick of the St Kilda Historical Society. According to Trove, a death notice appeared in the Weekly Times 1 November 1913 page 8 which stated that Mr Panton lived at Carannya, Alexandra St East St Kilda.
We believe his house might have been near 61 Alexandra Street, currently a rabbinical college. The State Library has the old MMBW maps of the area, if you search on ‘St Kilda Plan 47’ that part of East St Kilda will appear. The rabbinical college mansion occupied the whole Alexandra-Alma Rd corner.
This information is from an inquiry we have received about Joseph Panton: I am researching a one-time Melbourne Police Magistrate – Joseph Anderson Panton, (1831 – 1913) – buried in the St Kilda Cemetery. He was a substantial landholder in Flinders and also a “Port Phillip Pioneer” – I am on committees of both the Flinders District Historical Society and the Port Phillip Pioneers Group.
His house was in the northern end; and west side of Alexandra Street, between Alma Road and Cardigan Street (according to Sands and MacDougall). I have seen some very good photographs of the interior and exterior of the Panton house that are in the Panton Manuscript Collection at the SLV.
